The History of our Youth Group
The JFK Youth Group started sometime around 1998 with a group of concerned mothers and the guidance of an Army Captain, Pedro Molina. The group started meeting in the activity room at JFK Chapel in Fort Bragg. The main focus at this point was to organized the youth of the hispanic community in a group that would give them spiritual guidance after finishing their Confirmation Sacrament. Around August 2000 the group was lead by their Senior advisor Mrs. Mayra Christina Fuentes. Mrs. Fuentes organized the group and provided with an agenda and different activities that were geared to help the community in the Fayetteville surroundings. Is at this time that the JFK Youth Group adopts a name: Latin American Catholic Youth Group ( L.A.C.Y.G.). The membership consisted of youth which ages ranges from 13 to 20 years old. The had weekly meetings on Wednesdays starting at 6:30 PM and lasting for about 2 hours. The meetings were started with a prayer and then with and individualized prayer from the members. The body of the meeting was followed with an agenda that Mrs. Fuentes prepared ahead of time. The meeting then ended with a standardized prayer. The group also counted with and organized steering comittee with a President, Vice President, Secretary and a Treasurer that were elected every year.
The L.A.C.Y.G. was involved very intimatelly with the community inside Fort Bragg and in the Fayetteville surroundings. Besides their weekly meeting the group was engaged in several activities to promote Christianity doing a lot of charitable works. Among the activities they were involved with we can mention: Nursing Home volunteering, Conducting fundraising for noble causes like the American Heart Association, Collecting perishables for needy families during the holidays which were sponsored by the United Way of Cumberland County. The Youth Group also had their own fundraising activities for recreational purposes like the Annual youth banquet, field trips to the Zoo, emerald point, formal dances and dinners and other activities. The L.A.C.Y.G. also had ocassional visitors that spoke to them in different inspirational and spiritual oriented talks. The group was involved in developing the members in many skills like arts and crafts and often involved in discussions regarding issues affecting the teens/ youth socially, emotionally, academically and religiously.
In the life of the Chapel and being members of the Community of faith the L.A.C.Y.G. members participated in different ministries like: Altar Servers, Lectors, Choir and Music. On the first Sunday of the month the members of the L.A.C.Y.G. were mainly the Ushers for that Mass. During the CCD some members participated as collaborators for teachers. The Youth Group certainly had a vast history of many activities and ministries where they were involved very actively.
